Around the end of April, or beginning of May, work will get under way on the construction of the West Limassol Wastewater Treatment Plant, west of Limassol’s First Industrial Area. It is the second Limassol Sewerage Board plant of its kind, and its implementation comes with an 8-year delay, owing to disputes at local level and then the financial crisis and appeals to the Tenders Review Authority.
The unit will serve 25.000 citizens, ten thousand households, as well as several West Limassol projects such as the under construction casino resort and future development schemes in the Fasouri area. Speaking to ‘’Entrepreneurial Limassol’’ Limassol Sewerage Board Director Iacovos Papaiacovou stressed that "The project will prevent serious problems, which, we would have otherwise been facing a couple of years down the road, as the present system works at its limits."
The construction of the plant will contribute to the decongestion of the main drainage system, which transports more than ten thousand cubic meters of waste water from the western areas to the Moni station, stretching over a distance of twenty kilometers. At the same time, it will cover the needs of the western areas of Limassol as it will receive waste water from Zakaki, Agios Spyridonas, Polemidia, the Limassol General hospital and the 1st Industrial Area.
In the wake of the signing of the contracts in November 2018, the Kruger A / S and Cybarco Limited JV consortium is in the process of licensing the project, and in February it will apply for building permits from the Kato Polemidia municipality and the British bases, within the boundaries of which the unit lies. The €42,9 million project will be completed in two years. The contractor will undertake maintenance for a period of ten years, with the right to extend the agreement for another five years. The new unit, with a capacity of 13,000 cubic meters, will use membrane technology to produce treated water that will be suitable for irrigation purposes.
