The upgrading of infrastructure in Limassol’s industrial areas is entering a new phase, as works commenced on 15 June for the construction of an additional access point (entrance–exit) to the Agios Athanasios Industrial Area, within the Municipality of Amathounta. The project, which is expected to be completed within four months, is considered particularly important for the safety and functionality of one of the district’s most active industrial zones.
The Public Works Department has awarded the contract to AN. Christou Properties and Constructions Ltd for the amount of €198,550, while the total project cost is estimated at €250,000. The new road connection, approximately 500 metres in length, will serve as a second entrance and exit to the industrial area, meeting the needs of around 120 businesses and more than 5,000 employees.
According to Vasos Demetriades, President of the Agios Athanasios Industrialists Association, the construction of a second exit had long been a standing request of businesses operating in the area, as a serious problem existed in the event of an emergency or the need to evacuate the zone.
For his part, the Mayor of Amathounta, Kyriakos Xydias, stated that the project will contribute both to improving safety and easing traffic congestion. He pointed out, however, that this is only a temporary solution and that the permanent resolution of traffic issues requires connecting the industrial area to the motorway, as well as constructing the vertical road axis on the eastern side of the area, starting from the coastal road at the signal-controlled junction near Pizza Hut and extending to the area of the German Medical Institute and Oncology Centre.
As Mr Xydias noted, a meeting with the Minister of Transport, Communications and Works is scheduled in the coming period, with the aim of promoting the necessary projects that will provide permanent solutions to access and traffic problems. As is already known, the construction of a second entrance–exit is also planned for the 3rd Industrial Area in Agios Silas, within the Municipality of Kourion. As Mayor Pantelis Georgiou told “Entrepreneurial Limassol”, the relevant documents have now been prepared and submitted to the Tenders Board in order for the completed studies to be put out to tender. He added that the local authority has received assurances from the Ministry of Energy, Commerce and Industry that the necessary funding for the construction of the second entrance–exit has been approved.
“Consequently, we have been given the green light to proceed with the studies so that we will be ready to move forward with construction works in 2027,” the Mayor of Kourion added. Regarding the ongoing projects involving pavement reconstruction and road resurfacing in the 3rd Industrial Area, he noted that the pavement reconstruction process is currently underway and that, once completed within the next two weeks, resurfacing works will also commence.
It is recalled that during the latest Annual General Meeting of the Limassol Chamber of Commerce and Industry, former Minister of Energy, Commerce and Industry George Papanastasiou stated that the second entrances–exits in the Agios Athanasios and Ypsonas industrial areas are scheduled to be implemented during 2026, with the aim of improving traffic management and enhancing the response to emergency incidents.
A significant development is also expected for the Monagroulli Industrial/Craft Zone. According to information from the Public Works Department, construction of the new road network that will serve the area is expected to begin in late 2026 or early 2027. The project is anticipated to resolve a long-standing access problem, as the road leading to the zone has remained unpaved for years, creating difficulties for businesses operating there.
As “Entrepreneurial Limassol” reported in December 2025, the project entered its final preparation stage following the completion of tender documents by the Public Works Department and the securing of consent from the Holy Metropolis of Limassol for the necessary land acquisitions, paving the way for the commencement of construction works.
