CMMI launches the new EU-funded project studying marine heat waves and the past, present and future impacts of climate change on the marine environment
On 24 September 2024, the Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute organised a public launch event for the EU-funded PUREEF-Y project. The project is funded for three years as part of Horizon Europe, the EU's flagship funding programme for research and innovation to tackle climate change, contribute to the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals and boost EU competitiveness and growth.
The project is coordinated by the Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute (CMMI), Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) and Israel Oceanographic and Limnological Research (IOLR) who share a common goal to better understand past and present marine ecological conditions and design management plans for monitoring, conservation and restoration and policy reforms for the future.
It is a widely known reality that the Eastern Mediterranean has warmed faster than most other regions, affecting marine biodiversity and ecosystem function. In Cyprus, there is a greater need to better understand the impacts of climate change on the marine environment and to develop strategies, based on good practices inspired by international cooperation, for the effective management and protection of the vulnerable marine ecosystems in Cypriot waters.
