Limassol–Saittas road opens to traffic: roundabout at The Island entrance still pending

After a lengthy waiting period, during which the public saw Phase A1 of the Limassol–Saittas road nearly completed but not yet open to traffic, the project was officially handed over by the contractor to the Public Works Department on July 4. The road was finally opened to the public on July 5. According to the Public Works Department, the most recent delay, which had drawn complaints from road users who noted that the road appeared finished while no visible works were being carried out, was due to a number of pending issues that had to be resolved to ensure the project's full safety before final acceptance. As we were informed, despite pressure and criticism from the public, the road had to meet all safety standards before being officially opened to traffic.

During the second half of July, some minor works will be carried out on the section of the road where vehicles were circulating during the period when the entire road had not yet been opened to traffic. The only outstanding matter remaining in relation to Phase A1 of the Limassol–Saittas road concerns the roundabout planned to be built in front of the private school The Island, which according to the terms of its operating license is the responsibility of the school itself to construct.

According to the Public Works Department, the owners of the private school have already deposited the required funds. However, the submission of the construction plans by their appointed designer is still pending, which is necessary for the Department to proceed with launching the tender for the construction works. The cost of building the roundabout is estimated at around 300 thousand euros. The construction of the roundabout is expected to take approximately 7 to 8 months, provided there are no delays, as the project will be carried out in phases due to the anticipated impact on traffic flow. If everything proceeds smoothly, works are expected to begin sometime in 2026.

Phase A2 of the Limassol–Saittas road, which will extend to Monagri, is also still pending. According to the Public Works Department, everything is ready for the launch of Phase A2, pending the final decision from the Department of Environment regarding the Natura area in the Alassa community and the Kouris River. This assessment is necessary for the Ministry of Finance to give the “green light” for the project’s implementation to proceed.
