Radical extensions and upgrades to the Limassol Hospital begin in autumn

The extensions and upgrades at the Limassol General Hospital are expected to begin in September at a cost of twenty-three million five hundred and forty-six thousand euros, which were tendered by the Limassol General Hospital, as part of its development projects, in February 2023 and are co-financed by the EU. The relevant contracts provide for the design, construction and 12-year maintenance of major extensions and upgrades to the Limassol General Hospital and that the construction works will last for thirty-two and a half months from the date of commencement.

As the Director of the Limassol and Paphos Hospitals of the Limassol and Paphos Hospital of the State Health Services Organisation, Christos Nikolaou, told Entrepreneurial Limassol, the delay in the execution of the works was due to the examination of the objections submitted to the Tender Review Authority, which have now been completed. According to Mr Nicolaou, the architects of the project had recently visited the hospital, where the last details concerning the project were examined and before the end of August the contracts with the contractor were expected to be signed.

The five projects that will upgrade the Limassol General Hospital include the expansion and upgrading of the Accident and Emergency Department, expansion and renovation of the Dialysis Unit, the creation of a new Intensive Care Unit, renovations and upgrades to the basement and the creation of a new Infectious Diseases Unit. As explained by the Director of the Limassol and Paphos Hospitals of the State Health Services Organisation, with the improvement and expansion of the First Aid rooms, the space for the treatment of infectious diseases will be created at the same time, based on the experience gained during the pandemic period.  He added that these spaces exist in all hospitals, regardless of their size, for the temporary hospitalization and evaluation of cases and that this unit will be located outside the Hospital.

He stressed that all areas of the hospital will be modernized (even all the doors of the building will be replaced), expanded and create spaces "that will add quality to the service of patients visiting the hospital." Mr. Christos Nikolaou said that the new Dialysis Unit will be built on the 2nd floor (above the First Aid) and when the existing Dialysis Unit is empty, there is a plan to create a space for day care for patients, either from the Oncology or the Haematology Unit, who will receive their treatment without entering the hospital.

Regarding the works in the basement of the Limassol Hospital, he recalled that it was the only hospital apart from the one in Nicosia, which had its own laundry.  Since the laundry of the Nicosia Hospital will serve all the hospitals of the State Health Services Organisation, office space will be provided in place of the laundry in Limassol.  Improvements will also be made to the kitchen and storage areas. "In general, with the package of these projects, in addition to the creation of new infrastructure, the hospital will be given a breathing space," the Director said.

According to him, the plan to create a Rehabilitation Centre at the Limassol Hospital has not been abandoned and will be revisited in one to two years. This plan envisages an extension outside the main building of the Limassol Hospital in order to move the Psychiatric Clinic there and on the ground floor that will be released to create the Rehabilitation Centre, which is an urgent need.

"These rehabilitation spaces are something that is proven in practice every day that it is needed, since a patient leaving the Hospital, in most cases, needs a place with an upgraded level of care, as a transitional stage before going home.  Therefore, it remains for us an urgent project for the rehabilitation," he added.
