Limassol's vertical motorway turns green

The Department of Public Works will proceed soon with the successful bidder for the landscaping of the green areas of the Limassol Vertical Motorway. Barring anything unforeseen, work is expected to begin next September. The way for the signatures to be finalized was paved after the deadline for the submission of an appeal to the Tender Review Authority in relation to the award of the project by the Tender Board of the Ministry of Transport expired on June 30, so the successful candidate will now be asked to provide the necessary certificates and sign the contract.

As stated in the announcement of the tender results on the website of the Department of Public Works, two bids were submitted, one for €994.000 and the other for €1.246.000, of which the cheapest has been selected. The Tender for the supply and planting of shrubs and trees, the installation of an irrigation system and the maintenance and landscaping of the green areas of the Limassol Vertical Motorway, was announced by the Department of Public Works, on April 13, 2023, after a decade had elapsed since the delivery of the project.

The green spaces include the central islets, the green lanes and the six roundabouts along the road, from Nikaia Avenue interchange with the Limassol–Paphos Motorway, to the roundabout of the Vertical Road with the Parallel Road, known as the Lady's Mile interchange, next to the Limassol port.  According to the notice, the duration of the project will be five months. As is well known, after years of discussions and disagreements between the Municipalities of Limassol and Polemidia and the competent State services, during Vasiliki Anastasiadou's tenure at the Ministry of Transport, an agreement was reached for each party’s responsibility.

The arrangement provides for the Ministry of Transport to undertake the landscaping project and the first two years of green maintenance, after which the responsibility will pass into the hands of the two local authorities. The two municipalities will be given a grant that will cover 100% of the costs of green maintenance as well as an additional fund for administrative expenses, including the supervision of the contractor who will undertake the maintenance of the greenery.
