CMMI Hosts the 11th EuroGOOS International Conference in Cyprus

The Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute (CMMI) co-organized and hosted the 11th EuroGOOS International Conference, titled “Stronger Together,” in Larnaca from 18–20 May 2026. The event brought together scientists, technologists, and stakeholders from the fields of research, policy, and innovation, representing the wider oceanography community from across Europe and beyond. The conference fostered dialogue, networking opportunities, and the exchange of innovative knowledge.

The conference served as an important platform for discussions on the future of ocean observation and was held under the auspices of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union 2026, with the support of the UN Ocean Decade.

Through plenary sessions, panel discussions, thematic workshops, and presentations, participants exchanged ideas on innovation in marine observations, digital transformation, data management, collaboration, and addressing the triple planetary crisis. The discussions highlighted the importance of collective action in building a sustainable ocean future.

One of the conference’s key conclusions was the need to strengthen coordination within the ocean observation community, ensuring a more coherent and unified voice in supporting policymaking and the long-term sustainability of the European Ocean Observing System.

Particular attention was given to OceanEye, an ocean observation initiative recently announced by the European Commission. The initiative represents a unique opportunity to establish a long-term European ocean observing system tailored to the needs of each coastal Member State. Its objective is to support resilience to climate change, address biodiversity loss, and strengthen the blue economy by providing the critical knowledge required to tackle these challenges.
