MMI’s Open Access μFTIR LUMOS II Imaging System to Advance Microplastics and Materials Analysis

The Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute (CMMI) is pleased to announce the acquisition of a new open-access research infrastructure in Cyprus: the μFTIR LUMOS II Imaging System by Bruker. The system will be accessible to researchers, industry partners, public authorities, and other stakeholders, providing advanced analytical capabilities in Cyprus.

Acquired through the PLAST-IR project (NPD-CAPBLD/0624(A)/0002) and funded by the European Union’s Recovery and Resilience Facility under the NextGenerationEU instrument, through the Research and Innovation Foundation (RIF), the μFTIR LUMOS II Imaging System is a state-of-the-art analytical platform. It enables high-resolution Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) imaging, chemical analysis, and precise automated detection and evaluation.

The system will be primarily used for the identification and characterisation of microplastics in the Eastern Mediterranean, while also supporting broader research and innovation activities in materials analysis and environmental monitoring.

Hosted at the Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute, this new infrastructure strengthens Cyprus’ analytical capacity in marine and environmental research and supports scientific discovery, innovation, and evidence-based environmental policy. By enabling advanced chemical imaging and microplastics analysis, the μFTIR LUMOS II system will contribute to a deeper understanding of plastic pollution and support efforts towards the sustainable management of marine and coastal environments.

CMMI welcomes expressions of interest from stakeholders interested in utilising the μFTIR LUMOS II system.
