Significant projects underway to boost sports and tourism in Agros village

Assurances from the State have been given to the community President of Agros, Mr. Antonis Tsolakis, that by April, procedures will commence for the renovation of the "Glafkos Klyrides" Sports Center in Agros. According to the National Strategy for the Development of the Troodos Mountain Communities, the center will be upgraded into a National Center for Sports, Fitness, Research, and Rehabilitation.

The community President of Agros stated to "Entrepreneurial Limassol" that during the Rose Festival last May, the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development, and Environment, Dr. Maria Panayiotou, announced that the Council of Ministers had decided on the renovation and improvement of the "Glafkos Klyrides " Sports Center, which has been inactive due to issues since 2019.

The Minister added that the renovation, estimated to cost approximately €5 million, has been included in the budget of the Cyprus Sports Organisation (KOA). The President of KOA, Mr. Yiannis Ioannou, told " Entrepreneurial Limassol" that the necessary funds for the project have been incorporated into the organization's budget, noting, however, some delays in the procedures. He mentioned that by April, consultants are expected to determine the exact cost of the project. Mr. Ioannou emphasized that the indoor stadium in Agros is a priority project and that, with the approval of the supplementary budget for 2025, the renovation work will commence as soon as possible.

It is worth noting that the process actively involves the Commissioner for the Development of Mountain Communities, Mr. Charalambos Christofinas, and the Deputy Ministry of Tourism. The community President of Agros highlighted that the project is of critical importance both for the development of sports tourism in the broader Troodos area and for strengthening local sports (in schools, organized groups, and among residents). At the same time, the Agros community continues its efforts to build a football field meeting European standards, equipped with floodlights and a track. This project is expected to attract teams from Cyprus and abroad for training purposes.

According to the community President, there are some issues concerning this project that are expected to be resolved soon. One of these involves a plot of land owned by a private individual, which was purchased by the Agros Development Company to support the community’s efforts. As he explained, the plot will be transferred to the Church, which owns the remaining land in the area, to move the project forward. Additionally, there is an issue with a small stream in the area that needs proper mapping by the Land Registry.

"Once these issues are resolved, plans have already been drafted for upgrading the sports center with a football field, track, stadium stands, and locker rooms," he added. The project cost is estimated at approximately €1.4 million. Particular emphasis has been placed on the track, which, according to the community leader, will be highly beneficial for athlete training, taking advantage of the area's altitude, which is ideal for sports activities.

The President of KOA, Mr. Yiannis Ioannou, stressed that Agros is a region capable of attracting sports tourism thanks to its hotel, accommodations, and excellent climatic conditions. He added that for KOA and the government, Agros and neighboring communities are areas of interest that will be supported to upgrade and create suitable infrastructure.
