Following the success of the first "Thalassa 2022" conference, the second regional marine science conference "Thalassa 2024" was held on 28-29 May in Larnaca. Co-organizers were the Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute (CMMI) and the Maritime Institute of Eastern Mediterranean (MarInEM).
The aim of the conference was to highlight the challenges related to the Mediterranean marine areas and ways to address them. The conference provided a forum for creative communication and discussion among researchers and experts from academic and research institutions, industry, the public sector, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs). The topics included:
· Marine & Coastal Ecosystems
· Marine Biotechnology & Aquaculture
· Oceanography
· Marine Cultural Heritage
· Marine and Coastal Governance
The conference was welcomed by the Mayor of Larnaca and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute, Mr Andreas Vyras, who congratulated the Institute for the excellent organisation of an international conference, which promotes the city of Larnaca and Cyprus.
The CEO of the Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute, Mr. Zacharias Siokouros, welcomed over 100 delegates from more than 10 countries, both within and outside Europe. Mr. Siokouros spoke about the Institute's organization and infrastructure, its research activities in the fields of marine and maritime sciences, its international collaborations, and its developmental orientation.

The conference was a "European Maritime Day In My Country 2024" event and was endorsed by the Ocean Decade Actions as part of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development.
