Limassol Tourism Board planning the "House of Halloumi" in Pissouri

The "House of Halloumi" will be created in Pissouri, which is a tourist destination, under an initiative of the Limassol Tourism Board and the local community, with the prospect of becoming a point of attraction and channelling of tourists to the wider region for further exploration, Pissouri community head, Lazaros Lazarou, pointed out that the villages of the region produce top quality halloumi and the goal is to project this image to the outside world.

The proposed site for the project is the renovated building of the old police station of Pissouri, at the entrance of the community, on a hill with a wonderful view, which is still used as a Cultural Centre and cafeteria. "We believe that this project will add great value to the famous halloumi of our region, but also to the authentic Cypriot sheep and goat halloumi", Mr. Lazarou said.

The Limassol Tourism Board is doing what it takes for the project to be viewed as mature and ready for funding through the ‘’Milky Way – Heartland of Legends’’ program of the Deputy Ministry of Tourism. The "House of Halloumi" will be part of a route as designed by the Deputy Ministry of Tourism, where workshops and tastings will be taking place. Modern technology will provide the means for visitors to get to know the Cypriot tradition of the shepherd, the preparation of halloumi and its use in Cypriot cuisine. Interactive activities will be offered such as preparing and baking traditional halloumi and making of the shepherd's traditional flute, locally known as pithkiavli.

In the cafeteria that operates in the premises of the building, the Tourism Board’s suggestion is to create a special menu that will focus on halloumi. The project will be designed to illustrate with the use of technology the traditional production of halloumi, its history and its place in the culture of Cyprus and to disseminate through workshops the proud traditions of local halloumi making. At its entrance, the appropriate decoration will be created with objects and images, while a prominent position will be given to digital tools such as a hologram of the shepherd with his animals that will welcome visitors, a sound station with headphones with various melodies from the shepherd's music and screens with audio-visual material with the process of making halloumi based on the Cypriot tradition. There will also be a touch screen for visitors to play a trivial pursuit game after their tour, aimed mainly at children who will be able to enjoy the special educational quest trail.
