Medochemie, has undertaken yet another innovative action for a healthy and sustainable future, as part of its Corporate Social and Environmental Responsibility program. Aiming for a greener Cyprus, the company’s Environmental Protection and Energy Saving Committee, in collaboration with the community of Parekklisia and the environmental organization "Green Shield," organized a tree-planting event on Sunday, April 6, 2025, on Grigori Afxentiou Avenue in Parekklisia.
Dr. Christakis Sergides, Chairman of the Environmental Protection and Energy Saving Committee at Medochemie, emphasized the urgent need for action to address climate change. He highlighted the serious consequences we are already experiencing, such as extreme heatwaves, wildfires, floods, and melting glaciers, all of which contribute to rising global sea levels and threaten coastal cities.
"Humans are producing more carbon dioxide than nature can absorb, resulting in it being ‘trapped’ in the atmosphere. This intensifies the greenhouse effect and contributes to the dramatic rise in temperatures," he stated. Dr. Sergides pointed to a study published in the journal Nature Medicine, which indicates that climate change could lead to a 50% increase in deaths across Europe.
The solution, according to Dr. Sergides, lies in the power of trees. Through photosynthesis, they "capture" carbon dioxide, offering a natural mechanism to combat global warming. However, he noted that states must act swiftly, as small trees require decades to reach their full potential as natural carbon absorbers.
