Cafe Paris roundabout – still pending

The much-discussed project of the construction of a roundabout at the (Cafe Paris) intersection of Agia Fylaxeos and Makarios avenues, is once again at a dead end, after the rejection of the fourth improved proposal for the concession of part of the precinct of Lanitio Stadium by the School Administration. It is now up to the Legal Service to come up with a solution to the difficult puzzle, to which the Limassol Municipality and the Department of Urban Planning are expected to appeal.

The reason for the new impasse was the position of the Limassol School Administration, that it is not possible to alienate part of the Lanitis trust. It is now a matter of political decision; the competent ministers will be informed and the Legal Service will be consulted. The only sure thing is that there will be no fifth proposal. What is most likely, according to what Mayor Nikos Nikolaides told ‘’Entrepreneurial Limassol’’, is that the expropriation of the necessary space for the construction of the roundabout will be decided, as there are reasons of public interest. On his part, Limassol School Administration President Dinos Ellinas, reiterated the position that "we are not entitled to grant part of the trust".

The fourth version of the design reduces to a minimum the influence of the space of Lanitio. Specifically, with the reduction of the diameter of the junction, the concession is confined to 2,100 sq.m. against 4,000 sq.m. in the previous design. The project also includes the reconstruction of Makarios Avenue from the traffic lights of Polemidia to those of Ariel.
