The Kato Polemidia Municipality will soon be proceeding with a meeting with the Ministry of Interior in order to coordinate the actions concerning the use of the former Berengaria settlement. The completion of the work undertaken by the Department of Public Works, for the remover of all asbestos items from the site is expected within the first quarter of 2019. As the Mayor of Kato Polemidia, Nikos Anastasiou, mentioned, the Municipality’s aim is to create a 50,000 sq. m. metropolitan park in the area.
“The final plans for the Berengaria development will need to be examined as a whole by all stakeholders, so that the result is functional and beneficial to the people,” explained Mr. Anastasiou, expressing the Municipality’s desire to coordinate and communicate with the Cyprus University of Technology (CUT), to which it has granted a space of 90 acres in the same area.
As the plans by CUT include the creation of sports facilities in the area, Mr. Anastasiou noted that the Municipality should not proceed with a development of similar use, stressing the importance of not wasting any space or resources. The Mayor of Kato Polemidia also said that the Municipality services have undertaken studies on the possibility of connecting the metropolitan park with the Limassol National Forest Park, through the Garyllis Linear Park. Additionally, a proposal has been set forth regarding the creation of an open-air tram along the Garyllis Park, with the aim of a faster connection to the city center from the former Berengaria settlement.
