CMMI Hosted EU Permanent Representatives for Research and Innovation

The Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute (CMMI) had the honour of hosting at its facilities in Voroklini the Permanent Representatives of the Member States of the European Union in Brussels, responsible for Research and Innovation.

The visit took place at the initiative of the Deputy Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy, within the framework of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

During the visit, the Permanent Representatives had the opportunity to gain first-hand insight into the cutting-edge research conducted at the Institute through interactive presentations, as well as to tour its state-of-the-art research infrastructure.

The Chief Executive Officer of CMMI, Mr. Zacharias Siokouros, welcomed the initiative, underlining its importance in highlighting Cyprus’ role in the field of research and innovation, and presented an overview of the Institute’s work and its contribution to the national research ecosystem.

Subsequently, the Institute’s research centres presented their activities in a specially arranged space. Among others, they showcased research conducted in the fields of maritime technology, autonomous vessels, artificial reefs and marine ecosystem restoration, scientific diving and 3D mapping of dive sites, underwater cultural heritage, marine literacy, and digital technologies for ocean monitoring and data collection.

The Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute (CMMI) is a Centre of Excellence for Research, Innovation and Technological Development, established in 2019 in Larnaca with funding from the European Union and the Republic of Cyprus. Its work focuses on sustainable Blue Growth, while also responding to the needs of industry and society in the maritime and marine sectors by providing solutions to global challenges.

It comprises nine research centres specialising in maritime technology and decarbonisation, marine robotics, digital transformation in shipping, marine monitoring and data collection of marine and coastal ecosystems, marine biotechnology and aquaculture, marine cultural heritage, the human element at sea, as well as marine policy and international cooperation in maritime affairs.
