Green Kiosks in sixteen communities of Limassol – Set to operate in the coming months

In sixteen communities of the Limassol district, the installation of Green Kiosks has been completed, specifically in the communities of Arakapas, Kalo Chorio, Palodia, Apesia, Monagri, Trimiklini, Avdimou, Vasa Koilaniou, Omodos, Pachna, Souni-Zanatzia, Foini, Pano Platres, Kyperounta, Agios Ioannis Pitsilias, and Prastio Avdimou. According to information received by “Entrepreneurial Limassol” from the Department of Environment, these kiosks are part of a network of 50 Green Kiosks installed in remote and mountainous local authorities across Cyprus.

The Department of Environment explained that a Green Kiosk is a small recycling sorting center housed in a suitably adapted modified shipping container. Citizens can deposit separated recyclable materials there, enabling the separate collection of municipal waste. Its purpose is to record the quality and quantity of incoming materials, while ensuring detailed sorting and recovery of materials with high purity and value. At the same time, it maintains a people-centered approach, as it operates with the physical presence of an attendant.

The Green Kiosk accepts paper/cardboard, plastic, metal, textiles, and special waste streams. In addition, materials that can be reused without any processing may also be placed there, such as clothing, footwear, toys, CDs, and books. Special waste streams include edible fats and oils (used cooking oils), light bulbs, small electrical and electronic appliances, as well as household batteries/accumulators.

These kiosks are part of the project “LIFE-IP CYzero Waste,” implemented by the Department of Environment of the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, with funding from the EU Recovery and Resilience Fund. Its main priority is the prevention of waste generation, reuse, and recycling of materials. As part of the project, innovative recycling support infrastructures, such as the Green Kiosks, are being developed in communities across Cyprus. Their design was created by the National Technical University of Athens, a project partner, and has already been successfully applied in remote regions and islands of Greece.

The management of the Green Kiosks’ operation is the responsibility of the Limassol District Local Government Organization (EOA), in accordance with legislation. To this end, on 12 September 2025, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the Department of Environment, the Limassol EOA, and the two Development  Agencies of Limassol and Troodos.
Their operation is expected to commence within the coming months, and the recyclable materials collected are anticipated to contribute positively to achieving the national recycling targets of 60% by 2030 and 65% by 2035.
