Daphne Caruana Galizia Journalism Prize: Deadline Thursday, 31 July 2025

By Thea Pieridou
Press Officer of the European Parliament Office in Cyprus

The application period for the 5th European Parliament Journalism Prize, established in honour of Maltese investigative journalist and blogger Daphne Caruana Galizia, has already begun. She was renowned for her fight against corruption and was assassinated in 2017.

The annual prize aims to recognise outstanding journalism that promotes or defends the fundamental principles and values of the EU, such as human dignity, freedom, democracy, equality, the rule of law, and human rights.

Applications can be submitted until 31 July 2025 via https://daphnejournalismprize.eu/.

The prize amounts to €20,000 and will be awarded to journalists or journalistic teams whose work has been published or broadcast by media outlets based in the European Union. The winner is selected by an independent panel consisting of representatives from the press and civil society across the 27 EU Member States, as well as representatives of major European journalism associations. The award ceremony will take place around 16 October, the anniversary of Daphne Caruana Galizia’s assassination.

The 2024 Daphne Caruana Galizia Journalism Prize was awarded to the investigation “Lost in Europe”, which revealed that between 2021 and 2023, at least 51,433 unaccompanied migrant children went missing after arriving in European countries. The prize and its €20,000 monetary award are tangible proof of the European Parliament’s strong support for investigative journalism and its profound commitment to press freedom.
