Memorandum of Understanding between CMMI and EPLO

Athens and Larnaca, March 10, 2025 – The Institute for Sustainable Development of the European Public Law Organization (EPLO) and the Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute (CMMI) have officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a long-term collaboration in the field of marine and maritime research and innovation (R&I). The signing ceremony took place in Brussels on March 7, 2025, during the European Ocean Days week, marking a significant milestone in fostering scientific and technological cooperation between the two institutions.

The MoU acknowledges the shared commitment of the two institutions to advance research, policy development, and knowledge transfer in marine and maritime sectors. Both parties recognize the importance of bilateral cooperation in strengthening research capacities, fostering innovation, and promoting sustainability within the industry.

Key Areas of Collaboration
Under this agreement, CMMI and EPLO’s Institute for Sustainable Development will work together to:
· Facilitate capacity building and the exchange of information, knowledge, and expertise in the marine and maritime sciences.
  Encourage joint participation in research projects and policy initiatives aimed at addressing critical challenges in the sector.
· Develop and implement collaborative R&I programs focused on, among others:
- Big data and cybersecurity
- Materials, structures, and testing
- Environmental monitoring, modeling, and mapping
- Energy and subsea resources
- Ports and logistics
- Energy efficiency, digitalization, and decarbonization in shipping
- ESG and sustainability in the marine and maritime industries

Speaking at the signing ceremony, representatives from both institutions emphasized the transformative potential of this partnership. “This collaboration strengthens our commitment to driving innovation and sustainability in the marine and maritime sectors. By joining forces, we can accelerate research, technological advancements, and policy impact, said Mr. Spyros Kouvelis, Director, Institute for Sustainable Development - EPLO.

Mr. Zacharias Siokouros, Chief Executive Officer at the Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute, added, “We are proud to partner with ISD/EPLO to support knowledge exchange and research initiatives that contribute to a sustainable blue economy.”
