In the summer or September 2025 it is estimated that tenders will be called for the rehabilitation of the former Areas of Uncontrolled Waste Disposal in Vati, the coordinator of the Solid Waste Management Service at the Department of Water Development, Ms Andri Kakonitis, told “Entrepreneurial Limassol”.
She added that, now that the works in progress at the Areas of Uncontrolled Waste Disposal in Nicosia are underway, the process for the Limassol ones has started. According to the coordinator of the Solid Waste Management Service, in Limassol, a contract will be preceded for 19 small landfills, for which the documents have been prepared and approvals from the Treasury of the Republic of Cyprus are expected soon, so that it can be put out to tender.
As regards to Vati, together with 27 other small landfills to be transferred to it, it is currently in the process of evaluating the studies carried out. As Ms Kakonitis told us, this project will be the last to be tendered, around the summer or September 2025. Regarding the creation of new green points in the Limassol district, Ms Kakoniti said that the Water Department is carrying out a project under the Recovery and Resilience Plan to build 14 green points across Cyprus. She indicated that for the Limassol district efforts were made to identify land plots, without this being achieved so far. "The plots indicated to us are either very steep, or they are located in Natura areas and environmental protection zones," she said.
Shee added that to overcome the problem, the department is in contact with the District Self-Government Organization, which knows the areas better, and the Commissioner for Development of Mountain Communities. Meanwhile, they have also had meetings with all the regional governors recently. "Unfortunately, while in other districts we have come up with land plots and are moving forward, in Limassol we have not found a single one," said the coordinator of the Solid Waste Management Department. It is estimated that there will be two new green spots in Limassol.
She also noted that at the same time a network of Recycling Corners will be created in Troodos, much of which is located in the Limassol district, and that more facilities will be built in Limassol than in other districts. The Recycling Corners fall under the same programme, but are smaller and simplified compared to the green points. They do not include a building with toilets, but are fenced areas with bins, cameras and some lighting. Ms Kakonitis noted that it is easier to find land plots for this purpose and it is estimated that a Recycling Corner will be created in each cluster of communities.
The President of the Limassol EOA, Mr. Yannis Tsouloftas, pointed out that at this stage there is a problem with the operation of the four existing green points in Limassol, as their authority was given to the EOA by law, but without the necessary funding. He said that the SEDAL, unlike the SALA and SYL, was not abolished and still receives funding. The EOA, under these circumstances, cannot manage the green points or pay their employees.
He pointed out that the four green points are too few for Limassol and that there are none in the mountain areas. He added that the Water Development Department, now that there are funds available, should double the number of green points.
Finally, he noted that the EOA, based on its pre-election commitment, is proceeding with the creation of a Mobile Green Points Service. This will allow residents to know when the mobile green spot will pass through their area so they can get rid of bulky items, such as a couch, without having to carry them themselves.
