The Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute (CMMI), the Cyprus Youth Organization, the Larnaca Tourism Development and Promotion Company, the Limassol Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Geoimaging Company and the Ayia Napa Municipality, have launched holding the 3rd "Name a reef" contest, for Primary Schools in Larnaca, Famagusta and Limassol, continuing the initiative that was successfully launched in 2021.
Its purpose is to give students the opportunity to be actively involved in the process of naming a natural marine reef, and through this process, to acquire knowledge and develop skills in the context of sea literacy.
Through this year's competition, students are invited to explore in an interactive way a natural reef which is located at a specific point in the sea off the Limassol coastline, at Zapalo Bay. Primary school students of the Limassol district are invited to name this reef. In similar fashion, students of the primary schools of Larnaca and Famagusta will have the opportunity for a virtual tour of the second reef, which is located in the sea area of Xylofagou, and which is available for naming by the students of these districts mentioned provinces.
The Competition is addressed exclusively to 4th to the 6th grade primary schools students in the cities and districts of Larnaca, Famagusta and Limassol and lasts until May 10, 2023.
Information material has been posted on the website of the Competition www.cmmi.blue so that teachers and students can get a better picture of the point and at the same time be inspired with the appropriate stimuli.
The evaluation of the entries and the selection of the name of the reef will be done by a Jury which is made up of representatives of the organizers and experts dealing with marine issues.
Individual prizes will go to the top three entries and honorary prizes will also be awarded to the schools of the winners.
The results of the competition will be announced during a ceremony that makes part of activities for the "European Maritime Day in Cyprus", which will be held with parallel actions in Larnaca, Ayia Napa, Limassol and Paphos in period 18-21 May 2023.
