LCCI Meets with Limassol District Mayors

Consistent with Chamber’s policy of pursuing dialogue, cooperation and joint action with the municipalities of greater Limassol, Board members of the LCCI held a meeting with the majors of the Limassol district, hosted at Limassol municipality.

Opening the meeting, Chamber President Costas Galatariotis thanked the majors for their positive response and pointed out that meetings of this nature are always helpful in terms of coordination in pursuit of joint objectives in support of Limassol’s interests.

There followed a briefing and discussion on the progress of development projects that are either planned or already under implementation in all six Limassol municipalities and the district of Limassol as a whole. Reference was made to projects such as:

  • The connection of the seafront road with Franklin Roosevelt Avenue

  • The first phase of the reconstruction of Agias Fylaxeos Avenue

  • The Limassol drainage lake

  • The pedestrian walkway along the beach between the Crowne Plaza and Miramare hotels.

  • Breakwaters offshore Yermasoyia

  • The completion of Ayios Athanasios Avenue and its connection with the seafront.

  • The Integrated Waste Management Unit at Pentakomo.

Also on the agenda was the management of the Dassoudi area of Limassol, with all mayors and the Chamber unanimous that it should be assigned to Yermasoyia municipality, and developments surrounding the abandoned Berengaria barracks area at Kato Polemidia, with agreement on the need for the place to be cleared ahead of considering suggestions as to how it can be used afterwards.

On the part of the LCCI, reference was also made to the current regime regarding coastal management where, due to the fragmentation of services and the jurisdictions involved, problems that arise from time to time are difficult to address in a comprehensive way. The LCCI submitted, as food for thought, the possibility of setting up a single body tasked with acting as a coordinator and aiming to achieve optimum results.

The Limassol mayors were also briefed about initiatives undertaken by the LCCI in promoting accessibility, the ultimate objective being to render Limassol a model disabled-friendly city, as well as about other projects and issues, including the Pentakomo Techno Park, Limassol Port, the casino-resort and the proposal for a New Industrial Policy.

Concluding the meeting, the Chamber and the Mayors expressed their wish for a frequent repetition of such get-togethers, aimed at mutual briefing and united action in promoting the case for Limassol.
