Joint meeting of Limassol and Paphos wineries – a Chamber Initiative

Possibilities for cooperation – and synergies – between Limassol and Paphos wine producers aiming to effect solutions to problems confronting the sector were discussed in the framework of a joint meeting held recently at the Limassol Chamber, under an initiative by the Limassol and Paphos Chambers.

Heading the two delegations were the Presidents of the Limassol and Paphos Chambers, Costas Galatariotis and Andreas Demetriades respectively, who underlined the importance of wine production for the Cyprus economy, pointing out at the same time that whereas there were admittedly challenges facing the sector, there were also opportunities that should be properly exploited.

During the meeting, wine producers presented a number of issues and difficulties that occupy their daily agenda, as well as issues pertaining to a desirable long-term strategy for the sector as a whole. Issues mentioned included the need for the establishment of bonded warehouses, the possible imposition of an excise tax on wine, obligations vis-a-vis package recycling legislation and the possibility of making use of European Union programmes. The wine producers also highlighted the need for hammering out a comprehensive National Strategy for the sector.

Concluding the meeting, the parties agreed to set up a committee to deal with technical issues of concern to the sector. For their part, the Chambers will take up the issues presented to them and act with the objective of achieving the best possible results.
