Limassol City centre flood protection scheme – full steam ahead

Five giant companies are the candidates for the Limassol city centre flood protection project. These are Cybarco, Cyfield, Iacovou & Zemco, Atlas Pantou and Medcon. The bids for the project are expected to be awarded on September 22 and, barring anything unforeseen, the construction contract will be signed in October, enabling the successful bidder to take over by the beginning of 2022. The whole project has a total budget of €7 million and work is scheduled to last 20 months.

Speaking to "Entrepreneurial Limassol", the Sewerage Board of Limassol-Amathus (SBLA) iGeneral Manager of SALA Giannis Tsouloftas stressed that the goal of the project is to provide a comprehensive solution to the problem of floods that afflict the Limassol castle area and Anexartisias Street. The project envisages the construction of three large rainwater culverts, with a total length of more than four kilometers, for the channeling of rainwater from the avenues of Leontiou, Agia Fylaxeos, Thessaloniki, Dodecanese, Vassilis Michailidis and Agias Zonis to the Garylis river.

Mr. Tsouloftas underlined that this is a very difficult project as it includes extensive excavations on a total of 27 streets in the city center, many of which are main arteries with heavy traffic and increased commercial activity with many services and underground networks. During the design, a great effort was made by SBLA to minimize inconvenience to the public. To that end, the terms of the tender provide for narrow time margins for work on specific commercial streets with extended hours, i.e. until late at night and on weekends.

In the meantime, construction work is already underway on the flood protection project for greater Limassol, worth over €16 million, in the Ekali and Tsirio areas. Polemidia and Germasogeia take turns in the autumn. The third major project of this nature, which concerns the diversion of the river of Agia Fyla to the bed of Garyllis through two culverts, along Evagoras Lanitis Avenue, will begin in October 2022.
