The World’s First Resident Underwater Swarm System for Ocean Protection, Monitoring and Regeneration of Marine Protected Areas to Take Global Stage in Nice
The Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute (CMMI),
SignalGeneriX,
Arkeocean, and
Lanego are proud to announce that EONIOS, the world’s first resident swarm of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) for marine protection, monitoring and regeneration, following a rigorous selection process, has been selected to represent Cyprus at the 2025 United Nations Ocean Conference, to be held in Nice, France.
The project will be featured during Cyprus’ dedicated diplomatic side event, showcasing EONIOS as a strategic solution for the protection and regeneration of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs). EONIOS envisions a future where marine technology becomes a native part of ocean ecosystems — using swarms of AUVs operating fully autonomously, in harmony with nature-based reefs and renewable energy, to enable sustainable exploration, protection, and regeneration. The system represents a giant leap forward in global marine protection.
The world’s first resident underwater AUV swarm system with nature-based artificial reefs that support biodiversity regeneration, powered by solar energy.
EONIOS combines swarms of micro-AUVs with resident docking stations embedded in nature-based artificial reefs. These structures act as both permanent AUV habitats and active tools for biodiversity regeneration. The fully autonomous system is powered by solar-charged surface buoys, enabling, for the very first time, permanent and continuous surveillance operations of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs).
EONIOS collects a wide array of data using onboard sensors and cameras:
- Environmental parameters (temperature, salinity, oxygen levels, pH)
- Acoustic signatures (marine life, vessels, and anomalies)
- Visual imagery
- Threat monitoring (illegal activity, ecological disturbances)
All data is transmitted to shore-based operators for continuous interaction between the resident technology.
EONIOS delivers unique value to coastal nations, marine operators, and research institutions:
• Permanent, low-impact monitoring of MPAs with real-time land–sea interaction
• Fully autonomous operations
• Scalable system with multiple AUVs to cover large areas in remote areas
• Embedded reef infrastructure actively supports biodiversity restoration
• Solar-powered, low-emission system designed for long-duration deployments
• Dual-use potential for environmental, civil, and maritime security applications
Cyprus’ EONIOS Side Event – UNOC 2025
The side event, taking place in the diplomatic Blue Zone of UNOC, will showcase EONIOS as a stand-out innovation in ocean monitoring and restoration, highlighting Cyprus’ commitment to marine protection and its leadership in driving technological solutions for the ocean. This initiative is supported by the Government of the Republic of Cyprus, through the active role of its Embassy in Paris, its Permanent Mission in New York, as well as the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the French Embassy in Cyprus.
A Franco-Cypriot-European Collaboration for a Sustainable Ocean Future
EONIOS is the result of a Franco-Cypriot collaboration, formalized in 2024 through a Memorandum of Understanding and R&D Agreement between The Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute, SignalGeneriX, Arkeocean, and Lanego. The initiative also contributes to Europe’s broader agenda on blue innovation and sustainable marine technologies, and defines a clear roadmap for the co-development of cutting-edge tools to monitor, protect, and regenerate marine ecosystems.
Following strong interest from various stakeholders, EONIOS will now be presented on the global stage at UNOC 2025. This marks a new milestone in Cyprus’ leadership in ocean innovation and highlights Europe’s growing role in advancing technology-based marine regeneration.
