The Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute (CMMI) hosted, for the first time, the European Commissioner for Fisheries and Oceans, Mr. Costas Kadis, at its facilities in Larnaca on April 25th.
The meeting was part of the European Commissioner's official visit to Cyprus and aimed at fostering consultation and further expanding synergies between the European Commission (EC) and CMMI, with the goal of achieving the EU's strategic objectives for a sustainable blue economy.
Among those present at the visit were the Deputy Minister of Shipping, Ms. Marina Hadjimanoli, the Deputy Minister for Research, Innovation, and Digital Policy, Dr. Nicodemos Damianou, as well as the Mayor of Larnaca and Chairman of the Board of the Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute, Mr. Andreas Vyras. Their presence highlighted the importance of advancing the local and national strategy in the field of marine development and sustainability.
The Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute (CMMI) is a Centre of Excellence for Research, Innovation, and Technological Development, established in 2019 in Larnaca with funding from the European Union and the Republic of Cyprus. Its work focuses on sustainable Blue Growth and simultaneously addresses the needs of the industry and society in the areas of the sea and shipping, offering immediate solutions to global challenges. It houses nine research centres, specializing in maritime technology and decarbonization, marine robotics, digital transformation in shipping, marine monitoring and data collection for marine and coastal ecosystems, marine biotechnology and aquaculture, maritime cultural heritage, the human element at sea, as well as marine policies and regional cooperation related to the sea.
