The contracts for the provision of Design Consulting Services for the Linear Park connecting the area of Agia Sofia and that of the sea front were signed between the Limassol Municipality and the successful firm in the relevant competition, which had been announced by the Local Authority. The initial estimated value of the contract is €350,000.
In fact, the firm AF MODINOS AND SA VRAHIMIS ARCH ENG, which has been assigned the project, has begun the preparation of the relevant studies and documents. The project under study will connect the Garyllis Linear Park along the riverbed, which was implemented with EU co-funding during the 2007-2013 programming period, and its organic connection to the sea along Pallados, Dimokratias and Alexandria streets, a section that was also implemented with EU co-financing during the 2014-2020 programming period.
The proposed connection will be through Agias Sophias Street and will be a way out and connecting axis of this area with the sea front. The connection concerns the redevelopment of the streets, which will include continuous infrastructure for pedestrians and bicycles as well as the formation of squares in the area. The project will include reconstruction and asphalting of existing roads, widening of sidewalks including access for the disabled and the blind, as well as construction of a continuous cycle path network, in addition to transportation, extensions, adaptations and installations of new service networks depending on the studies to be carried out by the relevant departments.
It will also include street lighting and urban equipment, landscaping of squares and construction of photo-controlled Zebra or Pelican-type pedestrian crossings, as well as traffic reduction measures. It will be built in the Apostolos Andreas parish in Limassol. The connection will start from the northern end of Agiou Orous Street and will end at Archbishop Makarios III Avenue, adjacent to its junction with Dionysiou Street, north of the Pelican photo-controlled pedestrian crossing. It will be 1450 meters long.
The 2nd section will extend through Agias Sofias Street with a length of 380 meters and through Roupel Street, with a length of 100 meters. Studies and tender documents are expected to be ready in a year and the construction of the project, which will also be co-funded by the EU, is estimated to take 18 months for the first part and eight months for the second.
