Delays notwithstanding, the construction of the new Limassol stadium in Kolossi is progressing faster than the road network that will serve it. Therefore, the first kick off, scheduled for September 2022, will find the stadium and the fans with incomplete road access leading to it. To cope with the traffic congestion problems that will arise, the project will be delivered in parts.
The submission of bids for the construction of the road network that has been announced, expires on September 24, according to the District Engineer of the Department of Public Works Thrasos Afamis. Speaking to ‘’Entrepreneurial Limassol’’, Mr. Afamis said there was much interest by several contractors. The estimated construction cost is €8,4 million. The timetable envisages the start of construction work at the end of this year, provided that there are no problems in the bidding process, and the completion of the project in 19 months, that is in July 2023. The contract, said Thrasos Afamis, has included a provision for partial delivery of the project with the aim of smooth, fast and safe traffic in the area of the new stadium.
As part of the project, Spyros Kyprianou and Tasos Isaak avenues will be upgraded, which will shoulder the traffic burden from the movement of hundreds of additional vehicles in the area. The project also includes the creation of three new roundabouts and the construction of four new entries-exits on the Limassol-Paphos highway. Also, the existing entrance to the highway to Limassol from Lofou street is canceled and a reversion area will be created. Meanwhile, offers are expected to be announced shortly for the second phase of the renovation of Makarios Avenue in Ypsonas, which includes the construction of a roundabout at the junction of the road with Elias Kannaouros street, next to Agios Georgios church.
