Four months before the official opening Limassol’s renovated municipal market (knows as Agora), more than 70% of the space available in the new compound has already been rented. Limassol Agora, as the historic city center building is known, will open its doors to the public on March 1, the opening day of the 2020 Carnival. It will include 14 restaurants featuring Cypriot, Greek, Asian and Italian cuisine, from simple street food to more gourmet flavors and 15 traditional food shops. In addition, there will be a traditional bakery and delicatessen, and on the mezzanine there will be spaces available for rent, either as offices for small start-ups or for other uses. There will also be a playground, event space, cafeteria and more.
Managing the is the Prosperity Group consortium, which recently opened its site to journalists in the presence of Mayor Nicos Nicolaides. In its 100 years of operation prior to the recent renovation, Agora has served not only as a product market, but also as a central meeting place for locals. The historic site, the mayor said, will retain its traditional character, while bringing in what is required by modern times. The Municipal Market will be at the forefront of our quest to revitalize Limassol's shopping center, he said, adding that with its uses and services it will be a pole of attraction for both Limassol and foreign visitors. The market is a vibrant place, from early in the morning until late in the evening.
According to Prosperity Group Manager Panos Alexandrou, the project will cost €2,7 millikon. The single management contract is for a period of 10 years, renewable for an additional five years. The planning of the Municipality of Limassol also includes the upgrading of the parking lot at A. Themistokleous Street, with the installation of an automatic controlled entrance to facilitate visitors to the city center.
