Limassol Area Municipalities: A new approach to beaches management aiming to increase revenues

As from next year Limassol local authorities will take over the management of the organized beaches that fall within their boundaries, breaking a long-lasting tradition of years whereby this management was actually leased to third parties. The main reason behind this policy change is the realization that revenues could be way higher, a point also emphasized recently by Interior Minister Constantinos Petrides. The Minister said Limassol Municipality revenues from the management of beaches amounted to €156.971 in 2018 and those of Yermasogeia at €100.462. By contrast, the relevant revenues of the Agia Napa, Larnaca and Pegeia Municipalities were €2.740.000, €1.513.000 and €1.000.000 respectively.

Yermasogeia Mayor Kyriacos Xydias told «Entrepreneurial Limassol» that one reason for this sharp contrast was those three out of Limassol municipalities had decided to take over themselves the management of their organized beaches. Another reason is of course the size of organized beaches which in the case of Yermasogeia is comparatively. Limassol City Municipality will also take over the management of its beaches, starting in 2020 when lease contracts currently in force are due to expire. Mayor Nikos Nikolaidis told «Entrepreneurial Limassol» that he believes Municipality revenues from this venture will double.

Meanwhile, the Agios Tychonas Community Council will be be moving in the same direction as of next year, aiming to substantially increase revenues which currently stand at around €80.000. Partial implementation of the new policy will start from this year in areas of the beach that have not been leased to private sector management, according to Community Council Secretary Director Antonis Antoniou.
