Safe Routes to school

The Limassol Tourism Board and Stratagem Energy Ltd, in the context of the European program ‘Civitas Destinations’, have been organizing workshops at Primary Schools in the Limassol region regarding ‘Safe Routes to school’. Twelve primary schools are currently participating in this activation. The ‘Civitas Destinations’ project aims to promote the development of sustainable mobility in six European cities. Participating cities are Limassol (Cyprus), Madeira (Portugal), Las Palmas (Spain), Valletta (Malta), Elba (Italy) and Rethymno (Greece).

The measure ‘Safe Routes to School’ aims to create awareness regarding safe ways for students to move from and to school. More specifically, it concerns travelling to school on foot, by bike, by bus or by carpooling.  Workshops have already been organized at the IZ’ Primary School (Kato Polemidia), Melina Mercouri, and Linopetra Primary School with the participation totaling to 165 students. Students took part in interactive exercises and team games regarding safe transportation and had a chance to express their thoughts and worries regarding safety and sustainable mobility.

In general, the students showed strong interest and discussed the benefits of using sustainable mobility options.  Workshops in Primary Schools will be completed by May 2018 and it is expected that more than 800 students will have the opportunity to participate. Simultaneously, research regarding safe routes to school is carried out among parents of primary school students, with the support of the Parents and Guardians Association. The results of the research will be announced upon completion of this effort.
