Study on how to tackle traffic jams at Agia Fyla junction

Bridges that will directly connect the northern suburbs with the center of Limassol bypassing the Agia Fyla junction are the preferred option established by a preliminary traffic study conducted by private researchers on behalf of the Department of Public Works and the Municipality of Limassol. The proposals, however, made it clear that the only bridge that is actually feasible under certain conditions is on the highway crossing that will connect Costis Palamas Street in Mesa Yeitonia with Elli Lampeti Street, east of Agia Fyla, at a cost of €1,5 million. In the case of Domnitsa Lanitou Kavounidou Street, the suggestion for the construction of an underground passage was rejected, because it would block the entrance to the Agios Arsenios church. Also ruled out is the possibility of constructing underground connections, because of the presence of the Southern Conveyor and other rainwater pipelines.

The results of the study were recently presented to the residents of Agia Fyla. The meeting instructed engineers to further study the solution to the crossing over to Ellis Lampeti street, namely, whether it would de-escalate traffic jams at the Agia Fyla roundabout, whether it would impact on the neighborhoods and roads affected by increased traffic, how it can be implemented and how much it will cost. It was also agreed to allow three months for studies to be carried out on opening up roads leading to Mesa Yitonia and Polemidia.  Subsequently, a new meeting will convene with the participation Agia Fyla and Mesa Yitonia interested parties.
