In view of the new 2021-27 programming period, Limassol Municipality is beginning the process of formulating a proposal that will allow it to claim development funds for the city's suburbs. At this time, Mayor Nicos Nicolaides explained to Entrepreneurial Limassol, the Municipality's development initiatives are at a crucial crossroads, as there is a need to update the strategic planning of 2014 and, on the other hand, extend the good practices that have been implemented, throughout the geographical area of the Municipality. The Limassol 2021-27 Integrated Development Strategic Plan will come up for public consultation, with all stakeholders and individual citizens. The goal, Mr. Nicolaides has indicated, is to enrich the plan with new ideas and proposals so that by the end of 2019 the basic design will have been completed.
In this context, the Limassol Municipality has already initiated direct contacts with the other municipalities of the greater Limassol area. Meetings will also be held with the strategic partners, professional bodies, Chambers, academic institutions, church authorities and citizens. 2020 will be the year to look for funding for projects, which can be done in a variety of ways: European funding, government sponsorship, municipal projects and alternative financing methods with the involvement of the private sector.
Some of the proposals that will form the basis of the consultation are to promote the implementation of Sustainable Urban Mobility actions (alternative modes of transport, park and ride, bike paths on all major highways), the promotion of "smart" solutions for waste collection, management and disposal, Pay As You Throw applications and a reporting platform for faults, road damage, cleanliness, disposal of large objects, immediate response indicating the progress towards addressing each individual request. The new development strategy for Limassol will also aim to promote entrepreneurship and innovation for startup businesses, e-government of municipal services and flood control projects, as well as social cohesion through affordable housing and community housing programs.
