Karvounas junction round-about not feasible

The idea of building a roundabout at the Karvounas junction of Limassol district is just not feasible, according the Public Works Department. Speaking to Entrepreneurial Limassol, Department Officer Elpida Epaminonda said the morphology of the terrain, with steep slopes on opposite sides of the road, was such that any idea of a roundabout was essentially not realistic. Responding to the complaints of many drivers who described the junction as dangerous, Ms Epaminonda explained that in the past various scenarios and possibilities were considered, one of which provided for the construction of a roundabout.

However, after further examination of the issue -- and relevant studies, it was found that the construction of a roundabout was not possible due to the terrain morphology, the high altitude difference and the short lengths of the roads involved. Moreover, concerns were raised about visibility not being adequate, which would engender the risk of traffic accidents. A proposal to place traffic lights at the crossroads was also rejected, as it was considered that it would not serve the purpose of improving road safety.

As a result, and after considering several options, mild traffic arrangements were made in the area, including signage reinforcement, the construction of a built-in islet and the installation of small poles guiding the drivers. These interventions, as Ms. Epaminonda pointed out, pointed out, were carried out with the approval of the Traffic Studies Division, the Police and with the consent of the local communities. Such are believed to have improved the level of safety for road users.
