September 2022 will mark the inauguration of the new Limassol football stadium which will cater to the needs of three Limassol football clubs. Work on the long-awaited project actually got under way in January this year when the first dredging machines entered the construction site. Some procedural issues that emerged lately between civil engineer and the contractor are not expected to compromise completion deadlines and as Cyprus Sports Organization (CSO) President Andreas Michaelides told Entrepreneurial Limassol, work on the project is proceeding and is due to be completed by mid-2022.
Mr. Michaelides said earthworks are almost finished and next comes the construction of the retaining walls, which will get under way shortly. Rubble from the earthworks is transferred to the neighboring inactive quarry of Ipsoupolis, which will be covered in order to create a large park at the Ipsonas-Kolossi boundary. The €29,3 project, implemented by the CYFIELD – NEOPHYTOU J.V. joint venture will have a capacity of 13.000 spectators and will meet all UEFA Class 4 requirements of UEFA class 4. That is, it can host any UEFA Champions League και Europa League game. All seats at the new stadium will be covered, and the whole projects will feature spaces and facilities for the media and VIPs as well as for the disabled.
It will also include a closed circuit TV system, canteens, boutiques and auxiliary training grounds. Meanwhile, the CSO has called on the Transport Minister to expedite the process for the construction of the road network that will facilitate access to the stadium. The project involves the construction of two new exits from the motorway way to the stadium and also two new access roads in the opposite direction (from the motorway to the stadium). The road works project will involve expenditure of €4 million and will get under way in early 2020 with a view to being completed by 2022.
