Lady's mile area revamping high on the agenda

An initiative to revive the process towards the implementation of the Lady's Mile upgrade project is under way by the Limassol Municipality of Limassol. The project has been effectively in a stalemate since 2017, when after 13 years of consultations, a master plan for the area was completed, and was accepted by the British Base Administration and environmental organizations. "We shall raise the issue with the Town Planning Department’’, Mayor Nikos Nikolaidis told Entrepreneurial Limassol. The Mayor stressed that ‘’the redevelopment of Lady's Mile is a major goal for the Limassol Municipality because it essentially refers to the substantial upgrading of what is perhaps the best beach of the eastern Mediterranean.’’

A meeting was held in mid-April with the participation of the Town Planning and Environment Departments of the Environment, the British Bases and the Limassol District Administration and according to the Mayor, the next step is the preparation of a specific plan on the basis of which a public consultation can be held. Even so, another issues that needs to be addressed in the of financing for the project, which is estimated at some €7 million. Mr. Nikolaidis expressed confidence that companies already involved in investments in the vicinity «will contribute financially to the realization of the project for the benefit of their own investment, but also as a gesture to the city of Limassol", even if they have no legal obligation to do so.

The project includes the conditional licensing of the restaurants in the area, through the issuance of a Town Planning permit, taking into account the environmental impact and the protection of the salt lake and the surrounding biotopes, as well as the need for services to bathers and the completion of the road up to Akrotiri, where hundreds of thousands of vehicles are moving during the summer season. In particular, the project includes the construction of a road paved with environment-friendly materials, the construction of lanes for pedestrians and cyclists, the installation of road lighting, water supply, the construction of parking areas and sewage facilities.
